Born into a Sanskrit speaking family, Swami Veda Bharati, formerly Dr. Usharbhud Arya, now 72, practiced meditation one hour a day at the age of 4. Recent laboratory tests of his brain waves indicate that he maintains a meditative state throughout all his activities. From the age of 6, he had memorized all the 4000 sutras of Panini's Sanskrit grammer. By the age of 9, he had completed the study of the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and six systems of Indian philosophy. He debated the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with high priests in Varanasi at the age of 9, and gave his first university lecture at the age of 13.
His commentary on the Yoga Sutras is recognized as the world's most authoritative. Never having been taught in formal schooling, he is considered a scholar-saint, in addition to being one of the foremost meditation guides. His vast knowledge of the different traditions of the world and their connections with each other have taken him around the world annually since 1947. Through the pracitce of Yoga Nidra he has the capacity to lead meditations in 17 languages with varying degrees of fluency, referring to the literary, philosophical, and mystical traditions to be found in them. Swami Veda links aspirants to the texts and the traditions of the ancient Rishis, and initiates the aspirants in the paths of meditation as taught by the Himalayan Masters, and as interpreted by his Gurudeva.
A disciple of Swami Rama, he resides in Rishekesh,
India on the holy river Ganga, and in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
